Today, SAMA is a non-statutory, professional association for public and private sector medical practitioners. It functions as a non-profit company registered in terms of the Companies Act as well as a Public Sector registered in terms of the Labour Relations Act. SAMA is a voluntary membership association, existing to serve the best interests and needs of its members in any and all healthcare-related matters. SAMA's Vision To be the representative association for the South African medical profession. South African Medical Association's Core Values SAMA has embraced core values which serve as a compass for our actions and to guide our organisation in the conduct of its business. The SAMA staff has defined leadership and their understanding of it, this is our view. It is also registered as a public sector for its members employed in the public sector. Only members of SAMA will be allowed to participate in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme of the SAMJ incorporating CME questionnaires. These renewals will also include a car disk for the next year. All renewals will be electronically generated and emailed to a member, on exception of members without email facilities, which will then be sent by normal postal services. The bursaries will only be used to fund study in the medical field i.e. The SAMA medical education bursary will be offered to a number of disadvantaged and deserving individuals on an annual basis (which annual number would depend on the funds available). Continuation of the bursary would be considered for the subsequent year if the student successfully completed the repeat year. Copy of letter of acceptance into an approved South African medical education program. Scholarship-holders are allowed to hold supplementary bursaries, grants or emoluments with unlimited values. If the applicant does receive supplementary funding during the duration of the scholarship, this will need to be declared to the SAMA Bursary Committee. Payment will be made directly to the medical school at the University. Payment for the second and subsequent years of study will be made only after submitting proof of successful completion of the previous year of study and proof of enrollment in the next sequential year of study.
